Rebuilding Beirut
On August 4, 2020 a horrible explosion destroyed a huge section of the port city of Beirut, Lebanon. People died. Property was destroyed. Lives were turned upside down. The country went into shock.
In response to emergencies like this we find ourselves asking why. Why did this happen? Who is to blame? What can be done to punish them? How do we make sure this doesn't happen again?
But in the aftermath, there is a question and answer much more difficult to pursue. What can I do to help? Against such things there is no law.
Several months after this happened, I read about an architect who asked this question and took action to make a difference.
Several apartments in the area of the port were no longer habitable as a result of the explosion. When Joe Salloum heard of this, he decided he could use his skills and resources to help remodel and rebuild these homes for free. Joe made a difference, and others joined him in the effort.

I continue to be inspired by this story to respond to help others in time of need.
